Our success is built on research, process expertise, and continuous innovation
Our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement not only enhances our operational efficiency but also drives commercial success. By staying at the forefront of technological advancements, we ensure that our products and processes remain competitive, sustainable, and aligned with market demands.
Research and Development Team
An important part of our growth strategy is the activities conducted in our laboratory, where we constantly evaluate and optimize different substrates and input materials to create the most favorable and stable gas production possible. Our proprietary HOLD Technology™ forms the basis of our production business. Developed over fifteen years based on research and practical experience from large-scale biogas production, it has resulted in our unique, world-leading expertise in designing and operating plants for optimal cost- and resource-efficient production.
In our laboratory, over 400 organic materials from 40 countries have been analyzed and evaluated so far, and new combinations are continuously tested to optimize the formula based on substrate availability. We also have a strategic focus on developing and creating profitable biofertiliser products favorable to different types of agriculture. Biofertilizer is an important part of our circular value chain, with organic waste and residues we bring into the process returned to the cycle and transformed into new production.
Substrate Evaluation
To enhance sustainable biogas production, the R&D Team has evaluated over 400 substrates, including waste and residual products from various industries. Each evaluation provides data on degradability, nutrient content, and methane potential, essential for modeling new process concepts and meeting certification requirements.
Networking and Collaboration
We actively collaborate with national and international research institutions, universities, industrial partners, and stakeholders. Our projects are funded by entities like the Swedish Energy Agency, FORMAS, the European Commission, and the Norwegian Research Council. We also work with Linköping University and the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC).
Biokraft HOLD Technology™ optimizes large-scale biogas production.
One of our successful concepts is HOLD Technology™, an advanced process technology that we have been continuously developing since 2005 to optimize large-scale biogas production. The method is one of the most effective globally, and when it was first implemented in full scale in Ulsan, South Korea, in 2007, our facility's production efficiency increased by 3-5 times.
HOLD Technology™ is based on three cornerstones:
In-house design
In-house design of critical plant components creates optimal living conditions for the microorganisms working in the digesters.
Optimised recipes - The Leadership of Microbes™
We have developed recipes for the right combination of substrates that result in optimal biogas production. St1 Biokraft has developed a unique expertise after testing over 400 substrates in laboratory environments. In a production facility, the blends can be supplemented with additives to achieve an optimal balance between maximum energy extraction, efficient degradation, and minimisation of byproducts.
Correct supply of substrate
Introducing different substrates into the digester is sensitive, and its efficiency depends on the design of the facility and the substrates being added. The goal is to keep the "pot boiling" even when introducing the new substrate. We measure gas production and control the mixture in the digester to ensure that the microorganisms maintain efficient production with high utilisation of the energy inherent in the substrate.
The resulting products, biogas and digestate, are then processed and transported to end-users, while any byproducts are managed to ensure a closed-loop system.
